Explore full-time non-residential training

From September 2018 we expect to offer full-time non-residential training in a different format to the ‘one day a week’ model currently used. Through this option you will be able to complete the Diploma in Theology, Ministry and Mission in two years or the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Theology, Ministry and Mission in three years, both accredited by Durham University.

Students will attend college for six block weeks during the academic year. These include a welcome week with some teaching in September and four other teaching block weeks. The sixth block week in May will be a retreat / formation week. Block weeks will commence lunchtime on Monday and end at lunchtime on Friday to give time for travel from a distance and will include some time for reflection. We will be intentional about building community both within the cohort and with the wider community within the block weeks.

Attendance and teaching at college in block weeks will be supplemented between block weeks when students log into a weekly virtual tutor group and seminar, using our excellent ‘lifesize’ video conferencing facility to connect the cohort and tutors, offering additional support for learning in context and formation.

Close integration between your context and the college is a priority, building on our expertise in contextual training. We envisage regular visits to students in their context and close regular liaison between the college tutor and supervisor. We will want to build a relationship with suitable supervisors to enable them to partner with us in ministerial formation. The college will offer support and training to supervisors to facilitate your engagement in context, and this could be offered through a virtual seminar or at college or locally. Supervisors will also be aware of your academic modules / assignments and encouraged to help you integrate theory and practice in supervision sessions. Such integration will also be a strong theme of the college input. Students benefit from access to a faculty member dedicated to the oversight and development of full-time non-residential training.

The balance of context engagement and study is designed to facilitate a high quality rigorous academic programme integrated with contextual engagement. This is organised as

  • Two and a half days in personal study a week, plus half a day spent in seminars and with your pastoral group accessed either in college or virtually.
  • Two days plus Sundays in context inclusive of supervision time with your church supervisor. Clear expectations will be given to supervisors in relation to your engagement in context.
  • You will have one day a week for rest from the programme.

Pioneer Ordinands (OPM) will benefit from engagement with other pioneer ordinands at Trinity with a pioneer focus overseen by a member of faculty. It is hoped to establish a rural ministry focus group for students with a sense of calling to rural ministry.
