Tutor to Part-time Ordinands

A bit about me

My family and I moved to Bristol at the start of 1999 when I was appointed vicar of Redland Parish Church and Tutor in Applied Theology at Trinity. My involvement at Trinity was the equivalent of two days a week and over the years I was involved in teaching preaching, evangelism and leadership as well as contributing to the development of what is now the Anglican Story, Ethos, and Practice programme and being a formation tutor. In 2012, I stood down from the faculty at Trinity, although I continued to teach preaching and to lead an ASEP group, and shortly afterwards took on the role of Area Dean for the City Deanery. In 2015 I was invited to become Tutor to Part-time Ordinands, and I have greatly enjoyed this role, supporting some amazing students as they combine study and ministerial formation with their professional and family commitments. I stopped bring vicar of Redland at the end of 2018 and now work as Adviser for Curacy for the Diocese of Bristol as well as being temporary interim minister in the Parish of Bradley Stoke. When not doing any of those things, I enjoy spending time with my family (our children all now live in London), watching sport (especially Chelsea or Bristol City) and films and over the lockdown period have become an enthusiastic vegetable grower.

Areas of interest

I spent the first five-and-a-half years of my ministry working at St Aldates Church in Oxford, which was at the centre of the charismatic renewal movement in the 1970s and 80s. This was where I met my wife, Beth, and when we left Oxford we spent time in the US, where I studied for a Doctor of Ministry at Fuller Seminary. My dissertation was on the eschatology of the Corinthian correspondence and its relevance to contemporary issues in the charismatic movement, and this has remained a theological interest. I am also interested in issues of apologetics and evangelism and in changing understandings of the ministry of preaching.
