A bit about me

I was born in the US and grew up in the state of New Jersey just south of New York City. My wife Melissa and I met while attending the same church and were married in 2001. In college I studied music composition and worked as a worship leader in a local church. It was in this latter context that I first realised that, far from being simply a set of ‘fences’ or boundary lines, the doctrines of the Christian faith ought actually to play a positive role in orienting the church toward wise speech and action in the power of the Spirit.

This discovery led to a period of study at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS), where I earned an MDiv and ThM in Systematic Theology while working in their Admissions Office as a recruiter and counsellor. After TEDS, my family and I headed to the University of Aberdeen where I completed a PhD in Christian Dogmatics under the late Prof. John Webster. In 2012 I arrived at Trinity College, where I am privileged to teach doctrine as well as direct our flourishing postgraduate research programme.

In my free time you’ll likely find me goofing around with my three kids, Jamie, Callie, and Malcolm, walking my yellow labrador, Maisie, and drinking single malt whisky while watching copious amounts of Netflix.

My research interests

My research interests revolve around the doctrines of God, the Trinity, and creation, as well as more specifically the writings of Karl Barth and Friedrich Schleiermacher.

I have supervised/am supervising research projects on the following topics: the relationship between music, theology and the moving image; the doctrine of scriptural inspiration, shame, the church and female sexuality; the vice of acedia in the Christian tradition; the doctrine of the Trinity in the thought of Richard of St. Victor; the biography and thought of John Ryland, Jr.; the role of humility in theological method with reference to Karl Barth; sin-bearing in the theologies of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Rowan Williams; the role of Christ’s flesh in the beatific vision; the doctrine of impassibility in Cyril of Alexandria and Friedrich Schelling; scripture and apocalyptic in dialogue with St. Bonaventure; the role of love in the theology of Jean Luc-Marion.
